La Spiga Restaurant and Bar

Osteria La Spiga Restaurant – Seattle, Washington by Graham Baba Architects

A masterful work of wood, metal and concrete, Osteria La Spiga restaurant in Seattle, Washington defines modern hospitality design with its understated, virtually raw utilization of materials. Envisioned by Graham Baba Architects, this 6,000 square foot space in Capitol Hill features reclaimed and recycled elements sourced from local craftsmen and is situated in the newly renovated Piston & Ring building.

What is so unique about this family-owned restaurant is that it doesn’t come across as obvious Italian. These modern interiors were transformed from a former auto body shop, and are now sheathed in warm wood, plentiful glazing, unfinished concrete and striking dark metalwork fabricated locally. Detailed iron decor such as the wheat-design hooks alongside the booths and scrolled pedestal bases weave intricate details into the vast space.

Gorgeous timber trusses create a rustic vibe, which beautifully contrasts the industrial concrete and contemporary iron and glass lighting fixtures–love the versions over the private booths. Textured translucent screens mimicking wood grain create privacy partitions within the open plan. A second-story mezzanine overlooks the main dining room and faces the full-volume wall of steel-framed glass windows. A back patio is set with small dining tables and chairs, and can be accessed directly from retractable glass doors in the warmer months.

The bar is a composition of wood detail and concrete masses, with exposed beams and metal configurations forming a suspended sculpture overhead. Aqua blue blown-glass orbs illuminate this intriguing space, which sits open to the dining room. A mix of freestanding tables fills the perimeter, while a set of oversized rectangular wooden booths command attention at the core of the restaurant. A large farm table adjacent to the kitchen is also available for homey, family-style gatherings.

Osteria La Spiga embodies inviting modern hospitality design which delivers an innovative, organic edge.
