Paris-based hotel chain, Mama Shelter, has recently opened its third location in Istanbul, Turkey. Designed by the renowned Philippe Starck, this modern boutique hotel boasts 81 rooms, 2 restaurants, a rooftop lounge, 2 meeting rooms and sits in the energetic shopping, art and entertainment district of Beyoğlu on the European side of the city.
While rare to come across such stylish accommodations at a moderate price, Mama Shelter Istanbul does just that, with a vibe of industrial chic-meets-quirky cool. Common spaces are eclectic and welcoming, such as the reception area. Clad with a blackboard ceiling chalked with colorful graffiti, this avant-garde theme also carries through to the adjacent restaurant and bar.
The restaurant is presided over by a Michelin-star chef, where Franco-Turkish cuisine is served in the lounge-type dining room. Black-and-white striped banquettes adorned with lamps are the core of this space, while inflatables rung on light strips across the ceiling in the bar area add punches of color to the otherwise muted modern interior. An outdoor dining space featured a cabana-stripe wall with potted-flower sconces in cheery hues.
A rooftop lounge and restaurant is more showing of Starck’s signature design–oversized planters in popping brights, elongated communal tables and lounging beds fill this zone which has spectacular views of the Istanbul cityscape. A DJ spins both here and in the downstairs bar, bringing forth a see-and-be-seen nightlife.
Rooms are categorized by size and offerings, with well-planned layouts accommodating every guest from the independent traveler to families. More of the Starck influence, the palette is a foundation of bold white, accented with minimalist furniture and perky hues in unexpected places. Painted brick walls and custom area rugs scrawled with ar2rk are found in the rooms, while iconic movie character masks draped over lampshades provide wit and whimsy–who wouldn’t like a heroic dose of Batman while you dream?! One of the larger terrace rooms actually features 2 sofas–a modular orange model inside and another outdoors. Meanwhile, something that caught my eye was the in-room spin bike–what a way to bring on some fashionable fitness during your stay!
Mama Shelter Istanbul is a modern boutique hotel which captures the vibrant heartbeat of the hip Beyoğlu district while offering distinctively eccentric and ultra-stylish accommodations.
