From crumbling châteaux in Europe to an auctioned-off ghost town in Connecticut, this year the cultural obsession with abandoned buildings and so-called “ruin porn” continued unabated. Photographers, both amateur and professional, are now roaming every corner of the globe, in search of derelict hospitals, deserted monasteries, eerie hotels, and developments that that were never completed. One upside to the renewed interest in decaying buildings is that some of them are now receiving the care and attention they’;ve long deserved: a desolate office park built by Eero Saarinen in New Jersey, and a handful of gorgeous art deco ruins in Detroit are in the process of being restored.
