Location: Stillwater, Minnesota
Price: $ 1,650,000
An incredible example of Moorish Revival architecture is on the market in, of all places, Stillwater, Minnesota. Called the Alhambra, the opulent home was the brainchild of local lumber baron William Sauntry (and designed by Chicago architect Benjamin Marshall) and originally functioned as an entertainment and recreational hall behind his Queen Anne-style mansion.
The 1902-built abode is now available after a top-down restoration that took nearly a decade to complete. Handblown lights from India, re-silvered full-length mirrors, repurposed inlaid hardwood floors, and custom-made trim are just a few of the details that went into the project, which was inspired by original photographs of the hall.
But for the owners, their focus was trained on transforming the gymnasium into a family home. That meant converting the bowling alley into into children’s loft-style bedrooms, and removing the old indoor pool and turning it into a kitchen. An ensuite master bedroom is found on the second floor, while a dining room occupies a vaulted 25-foot-high space with original light fixtures.
The result is a 7,502-square-foot mansion with 4 bedrooms, 4 baths, an incredible open-plan living area with ornate detailing, flexible spaces for entertaining and working, and a French-doored and vaulted pool house.
A manicured garden boasts an additional water feature, creating a truly jaw-dropping property built, literally, for entertaining. Located at 625 5th Street N., it’s offered at $ 1.65 million. You’ve got to see it to believe it.
