When a Slovenian couple moved to Maui in the early 2000s, they opted to hire an architect back home to design a modern cliffside dwelling on Maui’s north coast.
Ljubljana-based firm Dekleva Gregoric Arhitekti is known for giving a contemporary twist to local building types, and rose to the challenge of the windy 2.85-acre lot. The home recently hit the market for $ 2.4 million.
Dekleva Gregoric crafted a unique design in which the home’s private areas—bedrooms, home office, garage—are contained within separate trapezoidal volumes connected by the open-plan shared space. “Each separate ‘mini house’ is a U-shaped volume that opens up to frame the perfect ocean view,” the studio told Dezeen.
The 2,175-square-foot home was made entirely of natural materials, from the ipe wood floors, ceilings, and decks to the interior stucco walls made with local sand.
But the most striking detail of the oceanside abode is its massive, extravagantly angled rooftop, which the studio describes as “the ultimate terrace and playground.” Clad in weathered wooden slats, the roof dramatically undulates like the landscape that surrounds it.
